No Needles Acupuncture!

When my son was much younger, he faced significant challenges due to allergies that restricted both his diet and activities. Naomi and I sought help from various health professionals, and we were grateful for their support during that time. One treatment that stood out to us was acupuncture. Not only did we observe a positive change in his allergies, but the method of treatment was particularly interesting.

At around five years old, my son was understandably apprehensive about needles. Thankfully, our Registered Acupuncturist introduced us to a different approach—using magnets instead of needles. Watching my son respond positively to this gentle treatment was relieving. It made me realize how crucial it is to find methods that resonate with each individual. It inspired me to incorporate this modality into my own practice

It’s important to recognize that not everyone is suited for every type of acupuncture treatment. Each person’s journey is unique, and for some—like my son at that age—the traditional needle-based approach was not ideal. For others, needles may not be a good option because of past traumas or heightened sensitivity to pain, such as those living with fibromyalgia. If you’ve ever thought about trying acupuncture but felt hesitant because of the needles, know that you’re not alone. Many are drawn to the potential benefits of acupuncture, from pain relief and digestive support, to managing chronic fatigue, or immune system support for those with ongoing cancer issues. Yet, the thought of needles can be the limiting factor.

What I love about acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the variety of modalities available. There are so many ways to support your healing journey without needing to use needles. Techniques like magnetic acupuncture, acupressure, ear seeds, cupping, guasha, and tuina massage each offer something different and valuable

Magnetic Acupuncture, in particular, is a great way to begin your journey with acupuncture. It utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate specific points on the body, providing similar benefits without the discomfort that some might associate with traditional acupuncture.

During a session, small magnets are placed directly on the skin at acupuncture points and held in place with gentle paper medical tape. They can stay on for up to three days. You can carry on with your daily activities, including showering or swimming, while wearing these magnets. If a magnet happens to come off, that’s perfectly fine; however, it’s best not to reapply it yourself, as the exact placement and polarity are crucial for its effectiveness. For sanitary reasons, the same magnets are never used on different patients.

I am grateful that there are many ways we can approach health and wellness. If you’re considering acupuncture, I encourage you to explore the different modalities available—you might just find the perfect fit for your own health journey.
